Rural Kenya is home to one of the world’s poorest communities. At the dawn of the 21st century, Kenya’s people are coping with crushing poverty, rising infant and child mortality rates, and inconceivable rates of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis, resulting in high numbers of orphaned children. Primary school enrollment in Kenya dropped roughly 5% from 1990 to 2001. The promise of a free education for all has yet to be fulfilled. Currently, only 50% of all 8th graders will go on to secondary education. Help us to secure the future of tomorrow in Kenya by giving their students an opportunity they never had - access to world-class education regardless of their ability to pay. Help us to set the model for additional schools to carry the same promise: a future for the students of Africa that is both hopeful and possible.
For Kisii, a rural community in Western Kenya, a beacon of hope called the Millennium Educational Center will soon rise on the horizon. Offering a new concept, the Center will provide:
A high quality primary education that is accessible to qualified students, regardless of their economic means
Housing, health, nutrition and counseling services that are critical to students who are living at the lowest levels of subsistence
A model that can be replicated in other impoverished communities throughout Kenya and Africa
Budgetary Information
A budget of $700,000 will provide classrooms, a media center, dormitories, cafeteria and all equipment.
Students will be charged tuition on an “ability to pay” basis. Individual student’s tuitions can be sponsored at the rate of $400 per student per year. This covers all school expenses plus room and board for the entire year.
